Clams, baked bream and torta caprese: recipes for an Italian summer feast

Jacob Kenedy’s menu, from aperitivo to pudding, is inspired by childhood holidays in a remote fishing village I spend as much of the summer as possible in Sperlonga, which is to say not all that much. Would that I had my grandmother Ginny’s work ethic. She spent most of her time there, doing little and living larger. My grandparents moved to Italy in 1952, seeking a rest cure for Ginny’s recurrent tuberculosis. My grandfather John was a writer and gallerist, my grandmother a Broadway and Hollywood starlet and painter. Arriving in Rome they found themselves surrounded by friends old and new. It is incredible to hear my mum recall their names – Ginny died not so long ago – but …

Yotam Ottolenghi’s Californian recipes

A celebration of Californian abundance, starring a tangy cobb salad, steak and cheese tacos, and rocky roads with a twist California, the state of plenty and infinite possibilities, had me hooked at the age of eight. It was 1977, Elvis had just died, and I landed there with my family to live for a year. In contrast to our dusty corner of the Middle East, the land of hot dogs, endless seafood, Taco Bell, Flintstones-shaped vitamins, multi-channel colour TV and big Cadillacs had a dizzying effect on my young mind. Decades on, I still adore California for its abundance and irreverence, for its rich cultural blend and for its ability to excite and give pleasure. Continue reading… Read more: theguardian.com

55 Tiny, Chic Wrist Tattoos That Are Better Than a Bracelet

If you truly want to wear your heart on your sleeve, then the wrist should be the canvas for your next tattoo. A flat plane fairly easy to tattoo, the wrist is popular for first-timers and small designs or sayings. While the wrist is generally a more visible tattoo spot than, say, the ribs or back, this placement allows for easy coverage with foundations or bracelets — making it an ideal choice for those who might be slightly tentative to get inked in a more prominent location. Conversely, we’re also partial to the wrist because of its visibility: the conspicuousness of this spot is perfect for tattoos meant to serve as a source of inspiration, support, or reminder. But don’t …

According to Experts, This Is the Most Effective Way For Women to Lose Belly Fat

When it comes to burning body fat, a lot of women have the same target area: the belly. Much to the chagrin of many of us, belly fat is notoriously stubborn, and it’s important to note that you can’t spot reduce fat. In other words, simply being diligent about crunches isn’t going to help you achieve your goal. “Just as you can not influence where your body stores dreaded excess fat when it packs it on, you can’t control where your metabolism opts to pull from when it taps into fat stores, which incidentally tends not to be from the region we gain it in the first place,” Corey Phelps, founder and CEO of Cultivate by Corey and creator of …

Found Leaves with Delicate Crochet Embellishments by Susanna Bauer

“Everything That Surrounds Us” In her series of sewn together and crocheted leaves and twigs, Susanna Bauer (previously) considers the fragility of nature and humans’ inextricable tie to its survival. The Cornwall, England-based artist combines the found elements with fine cotton thread to produce unique objects steeped in the history of craft. Intimate marks add detail to small patches or the complete outline of browned leaves, drawing our attention the natural growth pattens found in their interior. A selection of her free-standing and framed sculptures are currently on view with Le Salon Vert at VOLTA Basel in Switzerland through June 15, 2019. You can view more of Bauer’s works formed from leaves, thread, and twigs on her website and Instagram. …

Running Compressed Air Lines in a Shop

Choosing the right pipe First of all, don’t use PVC pipe. If it breaks under pressure, the plastic will shatter and send pieces flying like shrapnel. Use copper instead. It’s available at most hardware stores and home centers. Solder it using the same fittings as you would for water supply lines. If you don’t want to solder, use galvanized or black steel pipe. Measure the pipe runs and buy exact lengths; hardware stores will cut and thread the ends for you. Unlike gas and water lines, air compression lines don’t require perfect joints, so don’t worry if they leak a tiny bit. The Art of Letting Go (to Heal a Broken Heart)

by Humble the Poet, author of Unlearn “Things come apart so easily when they have been held together with lies.” ― Dorothy Allison I loved him like a brother, and he treated me as such. He told me I was a genius and that the world needed to hear my music. He was a ball of passion, and when he spoke it always felt like a battle cry to fight for a better life. I was working as a teacher, spending my summers with struggling artists who gave me that energy and community I craved. When I met him in Toronto, I felt like I found new family in my own hometown. His family wasn’t so abundant—his parents struggled with …

The Best Way to Save Hardwood Scraps

Perfect Storage Containers For Hardwood Scraps Short hardwood scraps are too good to throw away but hard to store neatly. So I bought a 4-ft. tube form made for concrete footings, cut it in half (the cardboard-like material cuts easily) and set the tubes on end. I tack the tubes to a wall or a bench leg so they don’t fall over. With the hardwood scraps stored upright, it’s easy to find a piece just the right length. Tube forms are available in various diameters for $5 and up at home centers. — Bill Wells Here’s another brilliant use for these concrete forms. Read more: familyhandyman.com
