Phuket villager braves the surf to rescue tangled turtle

A local villager in Phuket’s north has risked his own life to retrieve a young sea turtle caught up in fishermen’s netting. The turtle was spotted, caught up in the branches of a fallen tree along the shores of Mai Khao beach. The monsoon was kicking up big waves and it’s unlikely the locals knew how to swim, especially in the surf conditions. The local villager makes a few attempts to retrieve the turtle, eventually separating the turtle and netting from the tree branches with a meat cleaver. After clearing the netting from around the turtle’s flippers and neck, it was taken by an officer from the local Phuket Department of Marine Resources for evaluation and treatment before it will …

Trump can never admit he made a mistake

Some days, America gets a reassuring sign that President Trump has a sense of the responsibility and stature of the office he holds. When he spoke of “the love, the respect for the office of the presidency” he encountered in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, or when he called upon China to be “humane” in dealing with the Hong Kong protesters or when he said that while no one could surpass his support for the Second Amendment, he did not want guns in the “hands of a lunatic or a maniac,” he thereby acknowledged the place the presidency holds in confronting violence and the prospect of chaos. ‘Bees, not refugees’: the environmentalist roots of anti-immigrant bigotry

Recent mass shootings have been linked to ‘eco-xenophobia’ – part of a tradition that dates to America’s first conservationists The environmentalist, white nationalist, and influential anti-immigration activist John Tanton died less than three weeks before the El Paso shooting. Tanton lived to see his movement shape much of modern US immigration policy, but not this latest violent turn. A hate-filled document allegedly linked to the man suspected of killing 22 people in El Paso on 3 August echoed the kind of rhetoric generally favored by the far right – and also had a decidedly environmentalist, Tanton-like bent. The document praised the Dr Seuss character the Lorax, who says he speaks for the trees, and complained about the unsustainable overuse of …
