World’s largest urban farm to open – on a Paris rooftop

With the 14,000m² farm set to open in the south-west of Paris early next year, Guardian Cities gets a taste of what’s in store It’s a warm afternoon in late spring and before us rows of strawberry plants rustle in the breeze as the scent of fragrant herbs wafts across the air. Nearby, a bee buzzes lazily past. Contrary to appearances, however, we are not in an idyllic corner of the countryside but standing on the top of a six-storey building in the heart of the French capital. Welcome to the future of farming in Paris – where a whole host of rooftop plantations, such as this one on the edge of the Marais, have been springing up of late. …

Bill Barr: “Let Me Assure You That This Case Will Continue Against Anyone Complicit with Epstein” (VIDEO)

On Saturday US Attorney General William Barr ordered a full investigation into Epstein’s death to determine how such a high-profile inmate could have taken his own life and why he was ever removed from suicide watch. Epstein reportedly hanged himself early Saturday morning shortly after being taken off of suicide watch. There is no surveillance video of Epstein’s apparent suicide according to many sources familiar with the prison setup. On Monday AG Barr told the National Fraternal Order of Police in New Orleans that the investigation will go on following Epstein’s death. Attorney General Bill Barr: “Let me assure you that this case will continue on against anyone who was complicit with Epstein. Any co-conspirators should not rest easy.” NEW: …

Brexit has turned our government into an Orwellian Ministry of Truth | Polly Toynbee

While businesses struggle with the red tape of no-deal planning, ministers are busy with commemorative coins Britain is battle-ready for no-deal Brexit, that’s the message. Downing Street gave every department 72 hours last week to present watertight crash-out plans and woe betide any whose ideas blow up later, Dominic Cummings menaced. “Task and finish units” will stress-test each one: tremble at the military-style management speak. In case anyone dares express a doubt that the nation is 100% ready, a rapid rebuttal unit was launched yesterday by Michael Gove to kill off any “media myths and half-truths”, reports the Sunday Telegraph. It will stamp on such “myths” as the BBC’s report that dairy cows will need to be culled if produce …

CBS and Viacom are merging to become ViacomCBS

Ronen Tivony/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images CBS is merging with Viacom after months of negotiations, reuniting the two companies for the first time since they split in 2005. The deal will increase CBS’s content offering to customers — a growing importance as the streaming wars heat up. The company will be rebranded to ViacomCBS, according to a press release, with Bob Bakish, the current CEO of Viacom, becoming CEO of both companies under the merger. It will take months for the actual deal to close, with Joe Ianniello, acting CEO of CBS, set to report to Bakish into 2021, according to Bloomberg. The merger was approved in a unanimous vote by both boards. The move means the company is sitting …

State Department takes indirect shot at Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib in recent policy revision

The State Department recently revised its definition of anti-Semitism in an apparent response to strong anti-Israel rhetoric from progressive lawmakers like Reps. Ilham Omar (D-Minn.) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.). The agency’s list of anti-Semitic definitions now includes “drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis.” It is the 11th item on the list of definitions that, when initially publicized in May, included only 10 instances. Adam Milstein, founder of the pro-Israel Adam and Gila Milstein Foundation, brought attention to the revised guidelines last week. The revision was made after Omar and Tliab attempted to legitimize the anti-Israel movement known as Boycott, Divest and Sanctions (BDS). Last month the pair introduced legislation to restrict legislative measures that limit …

I’ve lived the gap between US and UK health care

Earlier this year, I shattered my elbow in a freak fall, requiring surgery, plates and screws. While I am a US citizen, several years ago I married an Englishman and became a UK resident, entitled to coverage on the British National Health Service. My NHS surgeon was able to schedule me in for the three-hour surgery less than two weeks after my fall, and my physical therapist saw me weekly after the bone was healed to work on my flexion and extension. Both surgery and rehab were free at the point of use, and the only paperwork I completed was my pre-operative release forms. Read more: cnn.com

The very idea of a united kingdom is being torn apart by toxic nationalism | Gordon Brown

Boris Johnson’s Brexit strategy is imperilling centuries of common purpose. It can’t be allowed to succeed The first step to solving a problem is to see it clearly. And if we are to understand why we are facing not only our most serious constitutional crisis since the 17th century but an unprecedented economic calamity precipitated by a no-deal exit from the EU, we must recognise that nationalism is now driving British politics. Having set almost impossible terms for any negotiation with Europe and preparing to renege on legal obligations to pay our debts to the EU – the economic equivalent of a declaration of war – Boris Johnson’s government is hell-bent on conjuring up the absurd and mendacious image of …

Bulletproof backpacks will not save my son

Both of my children need new backpacks before school starts this fall. My daughter, who is starting the fifth grade, is due for a new Harry Potter bag. Only one of the zippers still works on her old one, and given how many books she likes to shove in there every morning, it’s a wonder it hasn’t disintegrated entirely. My son, who is heading into seventh grade, has only one working strap on his Avengers bag, and we’ve had to break out his Captain America replacement early. As the two of them embark on a new school year, I wish their need for new backpacks remains the biggest problem they face. Read more: cnn.com
