Bugis Street Brasserie, London | Jay Rayner

A London hotel where Singapore Airlines’ crew go for a taste of home is worth checking out Bugis Street Brasserie, Millennium Gloucester Hotel, London SW7 4LH (020 7331 6211). Soups and starters £5.50-£9; mains £8.50-£17; desserts £6; wines from £18 Good things can come from bad. The bad thing in this case was the hopeful but inevitably hopeless trip I made a couple of weeks ago to the Holiday Inn on London’s Cromwell Road. I went for dinner, a word I’d put inside quotation marks to indicate irony, if the whole damn thing hadn’t traumatised the wryness out of me. To recap, I was invited by the executive chef and thought it would be rude to decline; as it turned …

Faith and freedoms: why evangelicals profess unwavering love for Trump

The faithful have been ardent supporters who turn a blind eye to the president’s moral indiscretions in favor of agenda When Donald Trump took the stage last month at a mega-conference for the Faith and Freedom Coalition, the country’s largest organization of evangelical Christians, he was granted an extraordinary welcome by the group’s chairman, Ralph Reed. “We have had some great leaders,” Reed said, to cheers. “There has never been anyone who has defended us and fought for us, who we have loved more than Donald J Trump. We have seen his heart and he is everything he promised he would be, and more.” Continue reading… Read more: theguardian.com

The problem with co-opting ‘queer’

During Pride Month, a 40-year-old cisgender heterosexual guy friend, who’s dating on OK Cupid, sent me a Gchat asking me to decode what it means to identify, as a prospective online match of his did, as “a straight, queer, sapiosexual, gender nonconforming, nonbinary, person who uses they/them pronouns.” As Gen Xers, this profilee’s earnest, messy mouthful made us laugh. “What?!” we guffawed like old people who don’t get it. The person of interest is 26 years old, a young millennial whose sensibilities probably align better with those in the Generation Z demographic, (those born after 1997), 35% of whom (according to Pew) know someone who uses gender neutral pronouns. Meera Sodha’s vegan recipe for Thai tomato salad with peanut crumbs | The New Vegan

Mediterranean courgettes and tomatoes take surprisingly well to the Thai papaya salad treatment In April, I was lucky enough to learn how to make the classic Thai som tam salad at the century-old Mandarin Oriental cookery school in Bangkok. From the first bite, it hit me from all angles. It was cold and crunchy, but also hot, sour, salty and sweet, which was exactly perfect for the 38-degree heat. It’s not particularly easy to find raw papaya here, so this recipe uses courgettes and tomatoes instead – a taste of Bangkok, but via an English allotment. Serve cold, with an even colder Chang beer. Britain’s story of empire is based on myth. We need to know the truth | Priyamvada Gopal

If we were taught just how much the UK was shaped by its colonies, the shared history would unite rather than divide us These days we’ve become wearily accustomed to depictions of Brexit Britain as oppressed by a villainously imperial Europe. Annexed “without permission”, Nigel Farage claimed melodramatically, defending Brexit party MEPs against charges of “disrespecting” the European Parliament. In a particularly far-fetched comparison, Ann Widdecombe MEP has compared Brexit with the resistance of “slaves against their owners” and “colonies against empires”. Prime ministerial frontrunner Boris Johnson too has spoken of Britain’s supposed “colony status” in the EU though, with a familiar double standard, he also believes that it would be good if Britain was still “in charge” of Africa. …

Coco Gauff keeps Wimbledon dream alive with thrilling comeback win

• Gauff, 15, beats Polona Hercog 3-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5• American teenager saves two match points in the second set Wimbledon has found itself a new star. Coco Gauff had already shown everyone she could play dazzling tennis, her victory over the five-times champion, Venus Williams, in the opening round signalling her arrival on the world stage. But last night, the 15-year-old, already the youngest player to ever qualify for the main draw, showed the kind of grit and fight that champions are made of as she came from a set and 5-2 down and saved two match points to beat Polona Hercog of Slovenia 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 for a place in the fourth round. Don’t Look Now review – Roeg’s scary movie can still make you jump

From its red stalker to its eerie strangers, this suspenseful classic set a template for horror – but its sexual intimacy adds a dramatic counterpoint few films can match This week sees the restored rerelease of Nicolas Roeg’s eerie masterpiece Don’t Look Now from 1973, adapted by Allan Scott and Chris Bryant from the short story by Daphne du Maurier. It’s a film that apart from everything else popularised the classic scary-movie template: start off with a family tragedy, follow it with an apparently therapeutic retreat or escape, an illusory easing of the sadness burden, then pivot to a horror nightmare, in such a way that the grotesque denouement appears to flower as a mysteriously logical escalation of that initial …

This millennial’s relatable tweet about time is blowing people’s minds

If you’ve ever found yourself confused when a colleague tells you they were born in the late ’90s (how are they even old enough to be working?!), or wondering how it can possibly be summer already when we’ve only just had Christmas, then good news — you’re not alone. Time, as Stephen Hawking taught us, is a strange concept. And the older you get, the more confusing it seems to become.  This is something that’s actually been studied. There’s a psychological concept known as Weber’s Law, for instance, that deals with how our perception of something will change based on its size, or quantity. As mathematician and presenter Hannah Fry shows in this Numberphile video, the law can be applied …

Hey drivers, use this to discover how much Uber and Lyft take from you

Uber and Lyft keep changing how their drivers get paid. Along with all the confusion, some drivers are feeling short-changed. Now a new online tool is available that collects driver receipts and crunches the numbers to find out how much the ride-hailing apps are taking from drivers. Transportation media outlet Jalopnik is investigating what it believes are unfair pricing structures, with Uber and Lyft taking as much as half of fares in some situations. Starting this week, the site is trying to collect as much driver trip payment data as possible.  Uber’s average earnings — the amount it takes after driver earnings are deducted from what a rider pays — is 22 percent of a ride, globally. Lyft calls this …

Like Taylor Swift, every woman faces a Justin Bieber

It’s easy to argue that, in 2019, women are more powerful than they’ve ever been in United States history. A record 117 women won office in the 2018 midterms. A record number of women are vying for the presidency in 2020. The youngest billionaire in history is a woman (Hi, Kylie Jenner!). The number of women CEOs in Fortune 500 companies hit a record high. But even at a time when “something is happening” with women, we’re constantly reminded that even the most powerful among us have to fight for what’s theirs, whether it be reproductive justice, a seat at the proverbial table, or creative license.
