This millennial’s relatable tweet about time is blowing people’s minds

If you’ve ever found yourself confused when a colleague tells you they were born in the late ’90s (how are they even old enough to be working?!), or wondering how it can possibly be summer already when we’ve only just had Christmas, then good news — you’re not alone. Time, as Stephen Hawking taught us, is a strange concept. And the older you get, the more confusing it seems to become.  This is something that’s actually been studied. There’s a psychological concept known as Weber’s Law, for instance, that deals with how our perception of something will change based on its size, or quantity. As mathematician and presenter Hannah Fry shows in this Numberphile video, the law can be applied …

Hey drivers, use this to discover how much Uber and Lyft take from you

Uber and Lyft keep changing how their drivers get paid. Along with all the confusion, some drivers are feeling short-changed. Now a new online tool is available that collects driver receipts and crunches the numbers to find out how much the ride-hailing apps are taking from drivers. Transportation media outlet Jalopnik is investigating what it believes are unfair pricing structures, with Uber and Lyft taking as much as half of fares in some situations. Starting this week, the site is trying to collect as much driver trip payment data as possible.  Uber’s average earnings — the amount it takes after driver earnings are deducted from what a rider pays — is 22 percent of a ride, globally. Lyft calls this …

Like Taylor Swift, every woman faces a Justin Bieber

It’s easy to argue that, in 2019, women are more powerful than they’ve ever been in United States history. A record 117 women won office in the 2018 midterms. A record number of women are vying for the presidency in 2020. The youngest billionaire in history is a woman (Hi, Kylie Jenner!). The number of women CEOs in Fortune 500 companies hit a record high. But even at a time when “something is happening” with women, we’re constantly reminded that even the most powerful among us have to fight for what’s theirs, whether it be reproductive justice, a seat at the proverbial table, or creative license. 'Dangerous overcrowding' decried at Texas migrant detention centers

The report by the agency watchdog came a day after a group of Democratic lawmakers toured detention centers for undocumented immigrants in the state bordering Mexico and denounced “horrifying” conditions there. “We encourage the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to take immediate steps to alleviate dangerous overcrowding and prolonged detention of children and adults in the Rio Grande Valley,” acting DHS Inspector General Jennifer Costello said in a memorandum to acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan. Samsung has reportedly fixed the Galaxy Fold

Samsung has redesigned the Galaxy Fold to address the screen durability issues that torpedoed its launch, Bloomberg reports, with the folding phone soon to begin commercial production. The company still isn’t able to confirm a release date, however, and one person told Bloomberg that the phone is unlikely to resurface at next month’s Galaxy Note 10 event. Samsung is said to have made the screen’s protective film “flow into the bezels so it would be impossible to peel off by hand.” Previous review units shipped with a film that looked like a removable screen protector, even though removing it would actually destroy the screen — as some reviewers found out. The Verge’s unit had a different problem, however, developing a …

The Handmaid’s Tale comes to life in Alabama. Women must heed the warning | Zoe Williams

The ludicrous indictment of Marshae Jones for the manslaughter of her unborn child is an extreme example of a disturbing pattern Marshae Jones was five months pregnant when another woman, Ebony Jemison, shot her in the stomach, in an Alabama town called Pleasant Grove. The 27-year-old Jones survived but the foetus, hit by the bullet, did not. Jemison successfully pleaded self-defence, since her gun was drawn in the middle of a fight that Jones reportedly started and was winning – according to an unnamed police source – until the gun was fired. Since the shooter was exonerated, it seems odd still to be preoccupied with who started the fight. But this is one of two key elements in the extraordinary …

This Newborn Baby Photo Shoot Featuring 9 Puppies Is Going to Ruin You

Newborn shoots are perhaps among the cutest types of photos ever – and sometimes the funniest – but take the combination of a puppy photo shoot and a newborn photo shoot, and, well, you’ve basically formulated the perfect way to break the internet. Teresa of Park Avenue Photography got the opportunity to photograph baby Brydon for the first time at just 6 days old – as well as nine little puppies, born on the exact same day. Although it would seem that photographing a bunch of wriggly puppies could be difficult, Teresa surprised us: “Brydon . . . was a booger to get to sleep! But once we started piling up the pups one by one he calmed down instantly!” …

Designed by Banksy, worn by Stormzy: the banner of a divided and frightened nation

The artist chose Glastonbury’s Pyramid stage as the place to unveil his latest artwork – a stab-proof vest – and helped the rapper speak for England It’s not what he does, it’s where he does it that makes Banksy modern Britain’s most effective artist. The pseudonymous street artist from the West Country picked the perfect platform yet again this weekend – the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury festival, no less, where Stormzy headlined in a stab-proof vest decorated with a near-monochrome union jack flag. It added a punch of visual tension to his verbal mash-up of modern Britain from knife crime to Boris Johnson. Only after the rousing show did a photo of Stormzy in his discomforting vest appear on Banksy’s …

Tips for How to Use Painter’s Tape

Clean Moldings Before Applying Painter’s TapeEven the stickiest masking tape won’t stay put if you apply it to a dusty, dirty surface. You’ll save yourself a lot of time and frustration if you start every masking job by cleaning the moldings or the wall to which you’re applying the tape. Usually a thorough dusting with a damp rag is all that’s required. But if the surface is greasy, you’ll have to wash it with a detergent solution. TSP-PF (phosphate free), available at home centers and paint stores, is the go-to detergent for most painters. Wait for the surface to dry completely before masking. An experience I just had

Today has been the first day in a while where I truly focused on the messages Tarot has been sending. I did something a little adventurous, I spent time with my family and my friends, and I did the things that bring me joy but for some reason I felt uneasy and called to journal so I wrote and wrote and the more I wrote the more I felt releasing. I’m on a journey to be reunited with my twin flame but as I was done writing I tried to fall asleep because I’m more drained than I’ve ever been. I had my music playing in the background like always and all of a sudden my music stopped and my …
